  17. <p>Two studies suggest a link between vasectomies and prostate cancer 
  18. </p>

  20. <p>     Husbands who are struggling to put off that simple snip-and-stitch
  21. vasectomy procedure their wives have been urging now have a
  22. new excuse. According to a pair of reports in the Journal of
  23. the American Medical Association, men who have had vasectomies
  24. are 1 1/2 times as likely to develop prostate cancer as men
  25. who have not had the operation. Harvard's Dr. Edward Giovannucci,
  26. who directed both studies, speculates that the reduction in
  27. seminal fluids to the prostate gland could trigger the development
  28. of a malignancy. But no one knows for certain how that might
  29. happen. Moreover, the link is relatively weak. Men who smoke,
  30. by comparison, are 17 times as likely as nonsmokers to develop
  31. lung cancer.
